scibe> index — names, places and things in the work
An index of the work itself: every person named in the sixty-seven lexias—not only the eight writers—the places the writing goes, the services and systems it moves among, and the works, refrains and recurring things it carries. The title page, the frame pages and the wiki are not indexed; this is an index of Scibe, not of its edition.
The rule is simple. An entry lists the lexias in whose text the name or thing actually occurs—the body of the posting, not its header—so a writer is indexed where the writing speaks their name (the work is fond of speaking of its writers, and of itself, in the third person), not where they happen to sign. The term list was made by reading; every citation was then verified by machine against the lexia texts, and citations that failed verification were dropped. Where the text leaves a name ambiguous—a Tom who is not certainly Tom Igoe—it is indexed only where the identity is certain, and the omission is noted at the entry. Where the text’s spelling differs from the familiar one, the entry stands as written: Mersault, the Shanindoahs. The index records mentions and nothing more; it offers no biographies. For the words themselves, see the glossary; for the plain questions, the faq.
