scibe> who — the eight writers

The eight writers, in the order they first appear in the work. Judy Malloy comes first because the work is hers—she originated and orchestrated it; the other seven are her contributors, credited here in full and in order. Under each name are the lexias whose posting header carries that name; where a writer is named inside another writer’s lexia, that is noted too. Nothing here goes beyond what the work itself records. Each lexia page carries its own reading, in the voice cast for its writer.

1. Judy Malloy

lexia 1 (no posting header), lexia 2 (August 17, 1994), lexia 3 (August 17, 1994), lexia 4 (August 17, 1994), lexia 7 (August 19, 1994), lexia 8 (August 19, 1994), lexia 9 (August 21, 1994), lexia 10 (August 21, 1994), lexia 13 (August 23, 1994), lexia 15 (August 26, 1994), lexia 17 (August 28, 1994), lexia 18 (August 28, 1994), lexia 21 (August 30, 1994), lexia 22 (August 30, 1994), lexia 26 (September 3, 1994), lexia 29 (September 6, 1994), lexia 30 (September 6, 1994), lexia 33 (September 10, 1994), lexia 35 (September 17, 1994), lexia 38 (October 2, 1994), lexia 42 (October 6, 1994), lexia 43 (October 6, 1994), lexia 46 (October 9, 1994), lexia 47 (October 9, 1994), lexia 50 (October 22, 1994), lexia 51 (October 22, 1994), lexia 52 (October 28, 1994), lexia 58 (November 11, 1994), lexia 61 (November 19, 1994), lexia 66 (November 25, 1994), lexia 67 (undated in its header)

The main artist. She originated this work, set it in motion from her sickbed in Tempe, and orchestrated the collaboration that gathered around her—Scibe is her narrator and her voice, and the lexias that carry no other writer’s header—the first, the last, and the strand that runs between them—are hers. The seven writers below are contributors to her work.

2. Tom Igoe

lexia 5 (August 18, 1994), lexia 20 (August 30, 1994)

Also named in: lexia 13.

Reiko Goto walks beside him in lexia 11 and is named in lexia 13; a 2024 Electronic Literature Conference paper credits that strand to “Tim Collins (with Reiko Goto)”. She is not one of the eight bylined writers.

5. Anna Couey

Also named in: lexia 18.

6. Valerie Gardiner

8. Douglas Cohen

lexia 63 (November 20, 1994)

Also named in: lexia 20, lexia 67.

His byline on the title page reads “Douglas Cohen” and the 1994 copyright line reads “Doug Cohen”; his single posting header signs simply “douglas — sternklang dogs”. Both forms stand as the record gives them.
